Minutes of AGM 21 March 2024:
The minutes of the last AGM had been circulated by email in advance in order that time saved
would allow for a social cup of tea and chat at the completion of AGM 2025 formalities. As
there were no questions raised in response to the circulated minutes, they were duly proposed
by Marlene Mainland and seconded by Athole Thomson.
Chairperson’s Annual Report:
Richard Shearer opened his report by mentioning the 2nd year of the Barriers Exhibition and
also paid tribute to the Building working group who had been busy throughout the year in
seeking funding and progressing with planning applications for the intended changes to the
building. At the end of the AGM formalities Colin Begley would display the Norr Architectural
plans for the building for us all to view and comment on and hear responses to any questions
coming forward.
Athole, Anna & Sheena along with Davie Flett are busy with preparation work for the
forthcoming exhibition of Davie Flett’s photographic exhibition of his Rowing of the North West
Passage Expedition. Dates were announced for this event and it will run alongside the
Barriers Exhibition for the 3rd term which will also include a further celebration of the Opening
of the Barriers which celebrates its 80th Anniversary this year on 12 May. The dates to note
have been amended for the NW Passage to a one day event on 19 April, followed by the
Building of the Barriers and the 80th Barrier roadway anniversary opening on 5th May for the
season. Moya McDonald will be compiling some details of the roadway celebrations including
a cavalcade tour of the Orkney Vintage car owners.
Richard made reference to the Pulpit and Communion Table currently still with the Orphir Kirk
and also with the new owners of the Stenness Kirk. Still hopeful that it will come good, but
until the owners of the Stenness Kirk can be contacted, it may not be an easy process to
recover the communion table.
The Christmas Carol concert was also a major fund raiser this year, with a variety of
performers, guests and visitors who were all packed in and joined happily into the seasonal
spirit for the afternoon event.
Richard then announced that he was resigning from the Chair and whilst he is happy to
continue to support the charity as a regular member, a round of applause and appreciation
followed. He was presented with a painting by a local artist, M Mainland which depicted the St
Nicholas Kirk and the surrounding area. Grateful thanks were expressed by Richard.
New chairperson and Treasurer, Anna Mason stepped up and assumed the duties of the
chair. She paid tribute to Richard for his years of loyal service to the charity.
Treasurer’s Report
Copies of the accounts were available to view. Anna gave a short resume of the current
situation. Income for the year ending Dec 2024, showed just under £3000. No new members
had registered. 2 years of Insurance had been due and were settled. Exhibition proceeds just
under £3000. Balance in bank £29796. Bank account in the process of being moved to Virgin
Money.
The report was adopted by Sheena Wenham. Seconded by Kirsty Sutherland
Appointment of Auditor:
Ivan Houston – proposed by Athole Thomson and seconded by Elspeth Linklater.
Trustee update:
With the resignation of the Chairman Richard Shearer, and with Anna Mason now serving a
dual role on the basis of this not contradicting our anticipated new Constitution, and all other
existing trustees agreeing to continue, no other changes were necessary, it was formally
agreed enbloc to continue. Proposed by Kirsty Sutherland. Seconded by Robin Bruce.
The formalities of the meeting concluded at 7.45 and was quickly followed by refreshments
and bakes. The formal viewing of the future plans for the building were laid out for all to view.
The gathering dispersed at 9.15 pm.
